The title of this work, “Orange Monster,” comes from the reference photo: a literally striking orange butterfly resting on a Monstera deliciosa leaf. What makes it so eye-catching is that orange and green are nearly opposite on the color wheel. The blue hues in the leaf add even more contrast, which is exactly why I love this piece so much. It demands attention and makes you pause to look.
The butterfly’s bright orange wings warn predators of its poison, yet the pigment itself is a creation of the creature’s own delicate design. Knowing this makes it all the more captivating to bring to life on canvas.
